The history of the Republique Dominicaine Punta Cana started with Christopher Columbus who discovered The Dominican Republic in 1492. Columbus loved the Dominican Republic especially for the gold which he found in the Dominican rivers.

The presents of gold attracted many Europeans who settled near theseDominican rivers (1493). Columbus made sure his reign was overwhelming. Therefore Columbus made his brother Bartholomew governor of 'Hispaniola' (1496).

Bartholomew founded the city of 'Santo Domingo' with the help of the Europeans. Hispaniola remained under Spanish control until 1697.

The French took the western third of this Caribbean island at the end of the year 1697. They called this side 'Saint Domingue'. They imported thousands of slaves from Africa to the Dominican Republic to work on the Dominican sugar plantations. Spanish rule came back in 1809.

Haitian Forces In The Dominican Republic

In 1821 the eastern portion of the Republique Dominicaine Punta Cana was invaded by Haitian forces. They reigned Santo Domingo for about 21 years. In these tropical years of the Republique Dominicaine Punta Cana the Island was given the name 'Dominican Republic'. U.S. troops occupied this Caribbean country from 1916 until 1924. Many leaders followed until 1965.
