The largest city and capital to the Gateway of the Caribbean is Santo Domingo Dominican Republic located in Santo Domingo Province. Its name in honor of Saint Dominic.
Unfortunately destroyed in 1502 by a hurricane but rebuilt by 'Nicolas de Ovando' who was Governor at that time.
Santo Domingo became an important geographical location for trades around the Pacific Ocean, all the way to Mexico.
In 1930 hurricane 'San Zenon' struck Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic again, this time with major damage.

After it was rebuild it was renamed to 'Ciudad Trujillo' . Related to the dictator 'Leonidas Trujillo' who governed till 1961.
After his rule Ciudad Trujillo was renamed back to Santo Domingo.
A much better choice if you ask me. In 1965 the United States occupied the Dominican Republic for a few years which caused many fights throughout this Caribbean country and Santo Domingo itself. For administrative reasons, Santo Domingo Dominican Republic is divided into four municipalities.
'Guzman National Distric, Santo Domingo Norte, Santo Domingo Este and Santo Domingo Oeste' . Santo Domingo has many high hills surrounding it with the 'Ozama' -and 'Isabella River' at the Center. Although the Caribbean has a tropical climate, fortunately Santo Domingo does not have the humidity and tropical heat you would expect from it. This is al due to trade winds.

There are a lot of important international and national firms in Santo Domingo Dominican Republic which causes diverse incomes. The Dominicans in Santo Domingo are poor or extremely rich.
Living in less developed neighborhoods or places near the coast that are well known for their luxury buildings. In Santo Domingo there is a well known attraction called 'Centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte' which is big sports complex.
There are also a lot of museums which you would like very much when you want to learn more about the history of the amazing Dominican Republic. The biggest Dominican Airport in Santo Domingo is Las 'Americas International Airport' . Combined with a port on the river named 'Ozama' , various parks, five highways, 8 miles of an underground subway system and eighteen universities, Santo Domingo will stay an important city in the Caribbean.
